Agartala: The Supreme Court collegium has recommended the elevation of Justice Akhil Kureshi as the new Chief Justice of Tripura High Court modifying the earlier proposal to elevate him as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.
Justice Kureshi will replace the present Chief Justice Sanjoy Karol, who has been transferred to Jharkhand High Court by the collegium earlier.
The collegium led by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has now recommended to the government to appoint Justice Kureshi as the Chief Justice of Tripura High Court. Justice Kureshi is the senior-most judge from the Gujarat High Court.
However, the collegium resolution does not disclose any reason for the sudden change in the proposal. The SC collegium said that it was modifying the earlier proposals taking into account the two communications dated August 23 and 27 sent by the Department of Justice on the proposal.
Earlier, Justice Kureshi, a senior judge of the Gujarat High Court, was transferred to Bombay High Court in October last year by the collegium.
