Shillong: Centre of Learning, Knowledge and Services (COLKS), a company co-founded by Vijay Byrsat, a prominent entrepreneur from Meghalaya, has bagged the gold in the first edition of SIAL Innovation Awards. The awards are a unique celebration of innovative food and beverage products and are a part of the ongoing SIAL India 2019 show at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
The jury comprising of food industry experts revealed the most innovative products in the food industry in terms of technology, ingredients, recipe, equipment and services.
COLKS was recognised for its innovative product, BEE Natural — a naturally infused honey. In the past, COLKS got noticed as one of the top five social start-ups in the country by the India School of Business and SAP Labs India.
Meanwhile, the silver award went to a South Korean company Food Culture Lab for its product ‘Kimchi seasoning mix’ and the bronze to a US-based company for its product ‘BuzzBallz Cocktails’. The winners were judged on the uniqueness of the product and its innovative qualities.
COLKS aims at creating an ecosystem which propagates inclusive economic growth through sustainable environment harvesting by empowering the rural population of a region through innovative and market oriented trainings. The company’s aim is to empower farmers and entrepreneurs to succeed in today’s multifaceted and ever-changing markets by also offering additional services of market linkage and consultations for the product and brand development.
By doing so, the company also hopes to create an ecosystem of farmers with sustainable ventures and livelihoods.
By starting out with a group of 30 farmers who were trained in apiculture (bee-keeping), COLKS now boasts of a community of 7,500 farmers who have undergone the varied agro & allied training and have gained access to national and international markets through an integrated value & supply chain developed by the company.
SIAL is considered the world’s biggest food exhibition. It started during 1964 in Paris. The last edition witnessed over 150 exhibitors from 13 countries with approximately 5,000 trade visitors, making it the ideal networking and business platform for the food and beverage industry stakeholders.
