Guwahati: A week-long workshop on smartphone filmmaking was flagged off by Brahmaputra Foundation in association with Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), Pune. The workshop started on September 15 at the Asian Institute of Management and Technology, Guwahati and will end on September 21.
With the advent of smartphones, it has now become an easily accessible tool for filmmaking. Add to it the rapid tech upgrade of phone cameras, smartphones are now able to now capture 4k videos at ease, becoming a package deal for film enthusiasts and filmmakers.
While addressing the participants on the first day, FTII director Bhupendra Kainthola stressed upon the importance of upgrading oneself to keep up with the times. According to Kainthola, smartphone filmmaking is not the future for it is the present and has been there for a long time. “….one has to upgrade themselves, otherwise, we have no other option but to become a dinosaur,” he added.

The first day of the workshop focused on the basics of framing, composition, and different camera angles possible with a smartphone. With course director Ajmal Jami spearheading the workshop, he focused on the untapped potential of a smartphone which lies in our pockets every day.
The FTII has been conducting 170 short courses in 39 cities across the country and a total of 7,000 people have participated in the workshops till date. Identifying 15 to 16 areas of film and television where skills can be imparted through short courses, it highlights smartphone filmmaking as one of them.
The workshop in Guwahati was organised by FTII its maiden venture in Assam drawing in participants from Lucknow, Silchar and Agartala, besides the state, to name just a few.
