Kokrajhar: After intensifying their checks on cattle smuggling and other illegal activities carried out by miscreants, the police arrested 10 people recently at Srirampur area in Assam’s Kokrajhar district and recovered livestock that was getting smuggled from West Bengal via Assam and Meghalaya to Bangladesh.

After getting a tip-off from a reliable source and in continuation with strict legal action against cattle smuggling and other illegal activities, Kokrajhar police carried out a number of search operations between September 5 and 6 and apprehended a truck bearing registration number AS-01GC-3837 which was illegally carrying cattle from West Bengal. The truck was apprehended on National Highway 31C near Srirampur under Gossaigaon subdivision in Kokrajhar district.

Along with the truck, an Innova (AS 01 AK-7363) was also apprehended where the occupants were Arun Lyngdoh and Munna Saikia alias Ikram Hussain, president and secretary of the All India Livestock Traders and Transporters Association. Both the occupants were taken into custody as they were escorting the truck coming from West Bengal. In connection with the same case, the police also apprehended a Maruti Suzuki Alto bearing a registration number WB 70L-8539. Altogether, 10 individuals were apprehended.

An FIR has been registered with Gossaigaon district police station in this regard. Case no.388/2019,U/S 120(B)/353/420/506 IPC,R/W Sec.11(1)(a)(d)(e)(h) of PCA Act,1960 and R/W Sec.192(A)/194/199 MV Act.

Speaking at a press conference, Kokrajhar SP Rajen Singh said that chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has been eyeing to bring a healthy environment by keeping strict vigil on cattle smuggling in the state. The police administration is also working with strict vigil and checks.

The SP further informed that total 54 cases have been registered against cattle smuggling and illegal activities in Kokrajhar district in the past four years. Since 2016, the police have been taking stern measures against cattle smuggling which are illegally carried out by some brokers in the region.

According to the records, 19 each cases were registered in 2016 and 2017; seven cases were registered in 2018 and nine cases in 2019. Altogether, 25 trucks carrying cattle through NH 31C and several roads in the district have been seized. The police arrested 162 persons for their involvement in smuggling cattle and seized 1,238 animals in the last four years, Singh added.
