Aizawl: The Mizoram sports and youth services department recently organised a programme to felicitate the champions of this year’s Subroto Cup International Football Tournament 2019 (Under-14 boys) at the Aizawl Press Club in the state capital.
The Saidan Secondary School, Kolasib represented Mizoram at the tournament which was held in New Delhi from August 21 to 29. The best player and coach award were bagged by the team’s Romalsawma and Lalvulliana, respectively. The team was also awarded the best school and received a cash of Rs 3 lakh for bagging the championship.
Speaking at the function, sports and youth services minister Robert Romawia Royte said, “Mizoram is planning to take up sports as an industry. We will soon upgrade the Regional Sports Training Centre Football Academy, Saidan Kolasib to the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and it will become the first football academy under SAI.”

The Subroto Cup International Football Tournament 2019 had 36 teams in the U-14 boys’ category. Teams from various states within India and from countries like Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Nigeria, Bangladesh and Afghanistan took part in the prestigious tournament
This is the fifth time Mizoram has bagged the Subroto Cup International Football Tournament in the under-17 and under-14 boys’ categories. In 2015, they simultaneously bagged the championship in both the categories.
