Itanagar: Union women and child development minister Smriti Irani on Friday lauded the efforts of East Kameng district, which has registered a sharp improvement in sex ratio at birth (SRB) among many other districts in the country.
The district registered an SRB growth from 807 in 2014-15 to 1,039 in 2018-19.
Irani, who was addressing a function at the national capital to felicitate states and districts for improving sex ratio, while making a special mention of East Kameng, said: “This makes it clear that nothing is impossible, if the government and society collectively resolve to achieve a target.”
Speaking to EastMojo, East Kameng deputy commissioner Gaurav Singh Rajawat, who has been spearheading the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign, said: “There has been a massive improvement in the SRB over the past few years.”
“Continuous efforts being made by the district administration, child development project officers and the health department to track pregnancies, support women at the time of deliveries and ante natal checkups and vaccinations and most importantly in spreading awareness on eliminating discrimination against girl child,” Rajawat said.
He added that local women organisations like Women’s Welfare Organisation, Changtham Ane and Mothers Group, etc, are taking active participation in making people aware about importance of girl child, their education, schemes of the government and benefits provided under the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao scheme.
These organisations have played a pivotal role and supported the district administration to make the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Pema Khandu “to save and empower girl child” a reality, Rajawat added.
Besides East Kameng, Union minister Irani, on the day also felicitated nine other districts — Mahendragarh and Bhiwani (Haryana), Udham Singh Nagar (Uttarakhand), Namakkal (Tamil Nadu), Jalgaon (Maharashtra), Etawah (Uttar Pradesh), Raigarh (Chhattisgarh), Rewa (Madhya Pradesh), and Jodhpur (Rajasthan) — for improvement in SRB.
