Six makeshift houses were burnt down by miscreants at Lamhainandi village in Nagaland’s Peren district on Friday
About 217 empty cartridges were recovered from the location

Kohima: About 40-50 unidentified miscreants entered Lamhainandi Village, a proposed village under Peren district of Nagaland, around 4.30 am on Friday and fired indiscriminately in the area.

As per Peren sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Vikato Thonger, six makeshift tent houses were burnt down and one church was partially burnt. “We recovered 217 empty cartridges from the location. However, there is no casualty,” he added.

He informed that over 21 persons who were settled in the village, which comes under the Zeliangrong Baudi (a tribal body), escaped unhurt after they saw unidentified persons coming towards the area from different directions and firing blank shots.

Being a disputed area between Dimapur and Peren districts, the government of Nagaland has restricted any kinds of activities in the area. The incident occurred in relation to the disputed land issue between the Western Sumi Hoho and the Zeliangrong Baudi.

When asked about the rehabilitation of these settlers, Thonger clarified saying that a few people from the neighbouring villages only made makeshift tent houses and resided in that area.

Although no arrests were made till the filing of this report, Thonger said that there were no casualties on either side.

In a viral video that has now surfaced online, armed men can be seen firing shots while tent houses are seen going up in flames. Few men can be heard shouting in Sümi dialect. A man is later heard shouting “Ahiwi. Lamhai Bosti tu julai dishe” in Nagamese, which translates to “Come. Lamhai village is burnt”.
