Guwahati: A 30-year-old woman hailing from Assam was allegedly stripped naked and beaten up inside a police station in Gurugram, Haryana after she was taken into police custody on charges of theft.
As per sources, the woman was working as a domestic help at a house in DLF Phase 1 area. She was picked up by the police following a complaint of theft lodged against her and two others by their employers.
The woman’s husband alleged that the cops beat her up mercilessly with belts and batons, including in her private parts, after stripping her naked inside a closed room. He further alleged that the policemen also forced her to accept to the crime.
As per reports, the incident came to light only after people from the Northeastern states residing in Gurugram and Delhi-NCR, including a few NGO members, came forward, following which over 200 people protested in front of the the office of Gurugram police commissioner Mohamad Aki.
The Gurugram police have ordered a probe into the entire incident after protesters shared some photos of injuries sustained by the woman. The Gurugram police have also suspended three police officials, including a woman constable, posted at the police station.
Meanwhile, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) on Thursday sent a notice to the Gurgaon police commissioner over the reports. “The NHRC has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that a 30-year-old maid was detained for several hours, stripped and thrashed badly on allegations of theft by the police personnel of DLF-I Police Station, Gurugram, Haryana on Tuesday,” the NHRC said in a statement.
