Imphal: Union minister of state (independent charge) for youth affairs and sports Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday said that with the introduction of new sports policy, every sportsperson in the country will no longer remain jobless.
The Union minister was addressing a gathering at the proposed site of the National Sports University (NSU) at Koutruk in Imphal West in Manipur after visiting Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in the state capital.
“The Centre will come up with a very good sports policy to ensure that no sportsperson remain jobless and can adopt sports as a career,” said the minister.
Expressing concern over the delay in the construction of the sports university, despite the passing of five years since the announcement was made in the Union budget, Rijiju instructed the officials to ensure that concrete steps are taken as soon as possible.
Meanwhile, seeking equal public cooperation, particularly the locals in the construction of NSU, the Union minister also assured the gathering that the sports university with the international standard will accommodate everyone who wants to pursue their career in the field of sports.
The university will have sports courses, including sports medicine, technology and students’ welfare, among others, which will be decided and executed accordingly.
“The idea for the establishment of NSU is not just like a small institute or just a centre for sports, but a symbolic one, as people from different part of India and across the world will come at the university,” said Rijiju.
Taking note of the lack of manpower to oversee the overall ongoing work progress, Rijiju also informed that appointment of a new vice-chancellor for the university will process soon after he returns to New Delhi.
Construction of the NSU in Manipur was announced in the first Budget in 2014 soon after Prime Minister Narendra Modi took over as the new premier. Under the proposed site with 325 acres, the university will have an academic zone, residential zone and students’ residences, respectively.
During his visit to the state, the Union minister also inaugurated a synthetic football turf of the Sports Authority of India, northeast regional centre, at Takyelpat in Imphal.
