Guwahati: With barely 24 hours left for the final publication of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, the state police administration has beefed up security measures across the state, identifying 14 districts as vulnerable to violence.
Addressing the media ahead of the publication on Friday, Assam director general of police Kuladhar Saikia said that every security arrangement has been taken care of and police and other security forces have been properly briefed about the whole situation.
“Superintendents of police have sensitised all personnel in their respective districts in order to ensure proper security arrangements,” Saikia said.
Saikia further said that police control rooms across all districts have been alerted and asked to keep close coordination with the district administration and NRC Seva Kendras (NSK).
Highlighting on the earlier publication of the draft NRC in 2018, in which over 40 lakh names were excluded, Saikia said that there was no report of any untoward incident as people maintained calm, and the department hopes the same to happen this time around too.
“However, every aspect of security has been taken care of including close monitoring of social media platforms to prevent violence,” Saikia said.
Earlier on Thursday, Assam Police took to Twitter to appeal people not to believe in any kind of rumours as some elements might try to create confusion in society over the issue . “The Goverment has ensured adequate safeguards for people whose name may not appear in the final NRC,” it further said.
The Assam government has also called in an additional 50 companies of Central armed forces to maintain law and order across the state.
As a preventive measure, prohibitory orders have also been passed under Section 144 of CrPC at Dispur, where the secretariat and Assembly complexes are located, and in many other vulnerable areas like Bhangagarh, Basistha, Hatigaon, Sonapur and Khetri, situated in and around Guwahati.
As per the guidelines shared by the NRC state coordinator, it has been mentioned that the links for checking the status will be made available on the NRC official website (www.nrcassam.nic.in) with effect from August 31, titled as “Supplementary Inclusions / Exclusions Lists (Final NRC) status”.
