Guwahati: Union minister of state for social justice & empowerment, Ramdas Athawale on Tuesday said that the Centre is committed to solving the flood and erosion problems in Assam. The MoS was addressing a gathering in Sengajan Majorbari village in Dhemaji district of Assam.

The MoS said that the Union government has taken steps for economic empowerment of the rural farmers. And considering flood and erosion as farmers’ problems, the Centre is committed to solving the problems in a scientific way.

Assam faces yearly floods which adversely affects economy, infrastructure and livelihood for millions, and claims several lives.

The minister also assured to provide social justice to all affected persons. “Our government is committed to ensuring social justice for the poor farmers. I have come to know your problems and assure you for its solution. I shall discuss the problems with the Assam government and take up it with central water resources ministry for follow up measures,” he said.

Addressing the same gathering, state minister for social welfare Pramila Rani Brahma emphasised on the need for a scientific study on the river basin to ascertain the cause of recurring flood and erosion in Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Majuli districts of Assam. She reiterated the need for a joint effort of water resources, agriculture and soil erosion departments to control river erosion, and called for adequate funds to carry out flood and erosion protection works in the districts.

Jonai MLA Bhubon Pegu informed that the state has constituted a five-member expert committee involving engineers from different departments to conduct a systematic study of the flood and erosion problems in Dhemaji.

He added that erosion problems caused by Lali and Brahmaputra river were taking a serious turn on its right bank after the river course was controlled by erecting boulder spars at Dibrugarh, on its left bank.
