Guwahati: An 85-year old man was allegedly abandoned, mentally and physically tortured by his son and daughter-in-law at Nowkata Borfulam village of Goreswar in Assam’s Baksa district recently.

The senior citizen, identified as Dharmeswar Nath, was found in an unconscious state by a local youth from an overbridge along National-Highway 31 at Rangia in Kamrup district. The man was rescued by the general secretary of Goriya Yuva Chatra Parishad, Ajijur Rahman, upon spotting him lying down under a tree along the road. Rahman then immediately carried the senior citizen to the nearby Rangia Model Hospital in the district for emergency treatment.

As per sources, the man’s son, identified as Balen Nath, has been allegedly harassing him physically and mentally for the past several days allegedly to grab all the property. Balen Nath not only tortured his father but also allegedly made him stay on empty stomach without food for many days.

Balen Nath, along with his wife, even allegedly made his stay outside the house at nights even during rains. They finally moved him out of the house in a bid to retain all his property. The senior citizen was also allegedly subjected to physical torture by his son and his wife at times.

Expressing grief, the man revealed that he was forced to moved out of the house by his son a month ago and since then he used to stay at the railway station and sometimes under the overbridge in the locality.

“I don’t have a shelter to rest in and most of the time I have had to starve as I didn’t have money. Luckily, a few good people noticed me, gave me money and bought me food,” he added.

Speaking over the heart-wrenching incident, student leader Ajijur Rahman said that he is contacting the local police station and will then decide on the next course of action. “I saw him lying unconscious under a tree, so I immediately shifted him to the model hospital,” Rahman said.

Rahman further said that upon questioning about his name and address, the man said that he was forced to leave his house after being subjected to torture by his son and daughter-in-law.

The man is currently undergoing treatment at the Rangia Model Hospital.

Meanwhile a case has been registered against his son by the GYCP general secretary at the Rangia police station.
