Imphal: The first-ever ‘trans catheter institute valve replacement (TAVR)‘ procedure — a surgery-less replacement of the valve for heart valve blockage patients — has been successfully performed at the Imphal Heart Institute in Manipur.

At a press conference held at Hotel Classic in Imphal, organised by Mother’s Care Children Hospital & Research Centre and Imphal Heart Institute, it was informed that the successful procedure was the first ever, not just in Northeast region, but in entire east India zone.

The high-end procedure was conducted on a 65-year-old woman having a condition called bicuspid aortic valve with severe narrowing of the valve since birth.

“This is a procedure which has recently introduced in India and very few centres have done this. We are happy and proud as being from Manipur, a small state from the Northeast, we were able to do the procedure which has been done normally in metro cities,” said chief cardiac surgeon of Imphal Heart Institute, Dr Arambam Athouba Singh.

According to an official report, the procedure for artificial valve replacement normally takes one and half hours to three hours and patients get discharged in four to five days.

Meantime, while they performed the procedure, the valve of the patient has two leaflets instead of three which is normal. This may lead to complication; however, the team led by the hospital managing director Dr Khumanthem Ratankumar Singh, the procedure was able to be performed successfully, putting Manipur in the TAVI map of the country.

“This is a procedure which is done on patients who have heart valve blockages. Most of the time, normally people go for open heart surgeries but now, with the latest technology coming up, the valve can be replaced without a surgery,” Athouba added.

Speaking at the press conference, Dr Khumanthem informed that of the some odd 1,400 cath labs across the country, TAVR has been carried out and performed only in 30 odd cath labs, and Imphal Heart Institute is one of them which has taken up such crucial cases.

With its latest development, the medical experts believed that around 90% of heart problems in the Northeast region can now be tackled in the region itself rather than getting treatment from metro cities.

“In Northeast, we can now tackle 90% of heart problems. Earlier, people from our region had to go to metros to get heart treatment, but now we’ve got many centres in the region. In Manipur, we have around three hospitals which specialise on heart issues,” Dr Athouba added.

As per the official statement, the medical charges for the procedure are between Rs 20 and 30 lakh since the devices used in it are imported from other countries. At the same time, the specified valves are all customised as per the patient’s requirement.
