Cyclists riding together to mark 73rd Independence Day in Guwahati, Assam on Thursday

Guwahati: Over 400 cyclists from all over the city came together to participate in ‘Freedom Ride 2019’ in Guwahati, Assam to celebrate the country’s 73rd Independence Day on Thursday.

It was the third edition of the annual event organised by a group called Great Cycling Together. Kicking off the day at 5.30 am at Sonaram High School Playground, the day progressed with the gifting of bicycle to 32-year-old Asnarayan Gamarh, a biscuit delivery person by profession. Gamarh had been using his friend’s cycle to deliver his services. So, the organisers came forward to lend him a helping hand.

The ride began at 6:30 am led by Abhishek Gogoi, a professional cyclist, and Asnarayan Gamarh and covered 19 km of the city before ending at Sonaram High School Playground.

A felicitation programme was also held where ambassadors – Sankar Hazarika, Marce Sangma, Juree Dutta and Malav Dutta — were felicitated for promoting cycling and inspiring people to take up the activity.

Abhishek Gogoi was also felicitated at the event for winning a silver medal in cycling at the 2019 Summer Special Olympic Games held at Abu Dhabi. The event also witnessed various other activities and competitions such as the ‘best decorated cycle’, ‘most stylish cyclist’ and ‘youngest cyclist’, among several others.
