Guwahati: In an effort to boost the state’s tourism in a global circuit, Assam government, for the first time ever, is planning to hold Bollywood’s most prestigious event, the Filmfare Awards ceremony, in Guwahati.

Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal made the announcements at the 10th annual general convention of the Tour Operators Association of Assam (TOAA) held in Guwahati recently.

The announcement comes a few months after the state government sanctioned Rs 300 crore to boost the tourism department in its annual budget presentation in February this year.

“We have sanctioned ₹ 300 crore to Assam tourism in the Assam budget 2019. To promote the state as a global tourist destination, for the first time, we are exploring the possibility of hosting the Filmfare awards in Guwahati,” Sonowal posted on Twitter.

This year, the TOAA convention primarily focused on discussions of various topics related to the changing dynamics and perceptions regarding tourism in the state.

Meanwhile, on the sidelines of the TOAA convention, CM Sonowal felicitated eminent wildlife biologist and environmentalist from Assam, Purnima Devi Barman, for her efforts in wildlife conservation across the state.

The chief minister also felicitated an entrepreneur from state, Shyamkanu Mahanta, for promoting tourism activities across the state.

Filmfare Awards honour artistic and technical excellence in the Bollywood film industry of India. The awards ceremony is one of the oldest and most prestigious film events in the country. The awards were first introduced by The Times Group in 1954, the same year the National Film Awards were introduced.

A dual voting system was developed in 1956 under which votes from both public and a committee of experts are taken into account. This is in contrast to the National Film Awards, where the results are decided by a panel of jury members appointed by the Indian government.
