Guwahati: The 66th National Film Awards announced on Friday by Rahul Rawail recognised a total of 31 films from the country. It also marked another national award for Assam’s famed filmmaker Rima Das, along with three others from the Northeast.
Das’ Bulbul Can Sing won in the ‘Best Assamese Film’ category at the ceremony. The national award-winning filmmaker is on a winning streak — her film recently won the ‘Best Indie Film’ honour at the 2019 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne in Australia on Thursday.

Last year, Das bagged four national awards for her Oscar-nominated film,Village Rockstars.

The recipients of the National Film Awards are usually announced in April and the presentation takes place in May every year, but this year the trend was broken due to the Lok Sabha polls.
Also, Ma’ama by Dominic Sangma bagged the ‘Best Garo Film’ in the regional language category. In the Land of Poisonous Women (Panchenga) by Manju Borah and Bobby Sarma Baruah’s Mishing (Sherdukpen) bagged the ‘Best Film’ awards in the regional languages category.
Incidentally, both Bulbul can Sing and Ma’ama were featured in Anupama Chopra’s film review website Film Companion’s anniversary edition in its list called ‘Beyond Bollywood: The Best Non-Hindi Films of the Last 5 years’.
