Imphal: It is undeniably true that we are born with a natural concern for the environment. However, somewhere down the line in life, we go astray and only a few continue to uphold the responsibility to safeguard Mother Earth.
Manipur girl Valentina Elangbam is one such example. Despite her young age, the nine-year-old girl from Hiyanglam Makha Leikai in Kakching district has shown that everything is not lost yet.
A video of her sobbing in an inconsolable manner over two trees being cut down has gone viral on social media.
According to reports, Valentina had planted the two gulmohar trees about four years ago while she was studying in Class I. Naturally, one could feel how happy she must have been seeing those trees grow gradually, one season after another.
Valentina, now a Class V student of Amutombi Divine Life English School, was astounded and poured her heart out after seeing the trees being chopped off while cleaning the bank of a river in her locality.
The matter came to light when her uncle uploaded the video of her crying and questioning the reason on social media. Soon after that, it reached the authorities concerned, including Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh, soil and forest conversation minister Th Shyamkumar Singh and other civil society organisations and NGOs who are working actively towards the environment.
On her request, 20 saplings, which were provided by the forest department, were planted along the road covering about 2 km on Sunday, reports said.
Meanwhile, according to some report, locals have also decided to plant around 500 saplings in and around the locality.
