Imphal: Manipur police on Saturday rescued two persons kidnapped by a gang and recovered the hijacked vehicle, a Maruti van. Four of the gang members who kidnapped the victims were also arrested by the police.
Talking to media persons on Sunday morning at Kakching police station, Kakching SP Victoria Yengkhom said that after getting specific information about the kidnapping and hijacking, a team of Kakching district police led by DSP H Rameshwar Sharma under the supervision of Additional SP N Netrajit of Kakching police station conducted a massive hunt for the kidnappers.
The two persons were rescued by the team when they were being brought in a gold-coloured numberless Maruti car from Sekmaijin area. Three kidnappers were arrested while the vehicle they hijacked was recovered from New Lambulane area in Imphal along with the other person.
Interestingly, one among the kidnapper is currently working as a member of the Village Defence Force (VDF) in Kakching district and has been identified as Moirangthem Tomba of Keirak Tomal Makhong Pareng. Another is a surrendered KCP rebel identified as Mutum Naobi Meitei of Heingang Makha Leikai. The two other arrested kidnappers are – Huidrom Sunder of Sekta Awang Leikai and Yumlembam Chitaranjan of Kakwa Nameirakpam Leikai.
The two persons rescued are Dilip Limbu of Kanglatongbi Colony and Bhim Tamang of Medziphema Dimapur.
Kakching SP Victoria said that the case is under further investigation.
The rescued driver of the Maruti van Dilip Limbu while talking to media persons said that he was coming from Moreh along with some passengers of Kanglatongbi on Saturday in his van. When they reached Kakching Lamkhai, a golden-coloured Maruti car overtook and halted them. The people from the Maruti car identified themselves as police personnel and ordered them to get down from the vehicle. They were reportedly asked to take out their belongings. He said as they got down from the van, a person who came in the Maruti car took his van towards Imphal.
Later, the remaining three persons who came in the Maruti car took the driver along with a passenger to another route. He added that they were threatened by the kidnappers inside the car while travelling but soon they were stopped by a police team who were frisking. They were rescued by the police team after they told the police team about how they were inside the car.
