Aizawl: In a shocking incident, a man from the hilly state of Mizoram in Northeast India had to fight with a bear and luckily lived to narrate the encounter, but with many injuries to his body. The incident occurred on Saturday.
The incident is reminiscent of Russian professional mixed martial artist Khabib Nurmagomedov who is said to have wrestled a bear when he was a child. Many people across the region are now likening H Lalramliana, a resident of Tawipui North II in Lunglei district, to Khabib — with some of them even calling him the ‘Khabib of Mizoram’.
It all happened when H Lalramliana went to a forest full of Indian rose chestnut trees (Herhse in Mizo language, the state tree of Mizoram) with his friend R Lalbiakzauva on Saturday. The duo were looking for their machetes that they had left at the forest earlier. As they could not find them, the two friends went in separate directions to look for them elsewhere in the jungle.
Lalramliana was alone standing near a cliff, when the bear attacked him. He described the encounter, “It was around noon when the bear attacked me. He first bit my left hip. As I did not have any weapon with me, I punched the bear six times, but that did not deter him.”
He added that during the fight, he rolled down a cliff with the bear. “The bear started shaking furiously while biting my right hip, legs and my left arm. I lost consciousness after it bit my inner thigh.”
Lalramliana said he survived only because of God’s mercy. The injury on his hand is half an inch deep and an inch long. On both his hips, the injuries were 7 to 10 inches wide and half an inch deep. On his left knee, the bear left a bite of 8 inch wide and an inch deep.
The victim lost much blood and could not move from where he was attacked. As he failed to return home, volunteers from his town went in search for him on Sunday morning. He was found before noon and immediately taken to civil hospital at Lunglei. Officials from the forest department were also informed about the incident.
