Guwahati: In a major blow to the militant organisations operating in upper Assam, a senior NSCN (R) rebel was apprehended from the 9 Mile area of Jagun in Tinsukia district on Friday during a joint operation conducted by Indian Army and Assam Police.

The joint operation was based on specific inputs received from reliable sources regarding the presence of an NSCN (R) insurgent in 9 Mile area, informed a statement released by the defence PRO.

During the operation, the rebel, identified as SS Sergeant Major Daniel Sankey, was apprehended from the Pangsau Pass area along India-Myanmar border. One pistol with magazine and five rounds of live ammunition were recovered from him.

The apprehended cadre along with recovered arms and ammunition have been handed over to the police for further investigation.
