Guwhati: Assam athletes are making India proud — this time, it’s Lovlina Borgohain, who clinched a gold medal at the Magomed Salam Umakhanov Memorial International boxing tournament in 69 kg category at Kaspiysk, Russia on Sunday.
Having had to taste a bitter 2-3 defeat at the hands of Assunta Canfora at the India Open final held in Guwahati recently, the World Championship bronze medalist was better prepared this time to tackle the wily Italian.
The Golaghat girl was on guard throughout the bout and never shied away from raining down Canfora’s flurry of punches to grab a narrow 3-2 win.
After grabbing the India Open silver and a bronze from the Strandja Cup, Borgohain’s efforts and dedication have been rewarded with her first international gold medal of the year.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal shared the victory on his Twitter account and wished her the best for her future endeavours.
Hailing from Golaghat district of Assam, Borgohain started her career as a kick-boxer, but later switched to boxing. She has been trained under Sports Authority of India (SAI) and was selected to participate in the 2018 Commonwealth Games welterweight boxing category.
In May this year, she won a silver medal at the 2nd India Open International Boxing Tournament held in Guwahati.
She also won bronze medal at the Asian Boxing Championships in Vietnam and President’s Cup in November 2017 and June 2017 respectively
Borgohain’s selection in the CWG 2018 was attributed to her success after she won a gold medal in the welterweight category at the inaugural India Open of an international boxing championship held in February 2018.
Later, she won a silver medal at the Ulaanbaatar Cup in Mongolia in June 2018 and a bronze medal at the 13th International Silesian Championship in Poland in September 2018.
On 23 November 2018 Borgohain represented India for the first time at the International Boxing Association (AIBA) Women’s World Boxing Championship, held in New Delhi, where she won the bronze medal in the Welterweight(69 kg) category.
