The ban on single-use plastic bags and other plastic products will come into effect from Thursday

Aizawl: The Aizawl Municipal Corporation’s dream of making Mizoram’s capital Aizawl, a plastic free city, will soon become a reality as the ban on single-use plastic bags and other plastic products will come into effect from Thursday.

AMC mayor PC Lalhmingthanga told a press conference in the city on Tuesday that the new law banning single-use plastic bags and other plastic products of below 50 micron will come into effect within the corporation area from August 1.

According to the newly framed AMC plastic waste management by-law, 2019, use of plastics, collection, disposal and management of plastic wastes falls under the jurisdiction of AMC, he said.

According to the Mayor, it has been estimated that more than 67,590 families live in Aizawl.

After the Centre framed plastic waste management rules, 2016, the AMC conducted a study within the corporation area which revealed that at least four quintal of plastic products are used everyday in Aizawl for commercial and different purposes, he said.

It has been estimated that over 159 metric tones of solid waste is collected daily by the AMC.

Lalhmingthanga said the government has set up municipal solid waste resources management system for Aizawl city project at Tuirial near Aizawl, which will come operational shortly.

The AMC also prohibits import of the banned plastic products from other districts and neighbouring states.

However, any plastic products which are recyclable and not covered under plastic waste management rules, 2016 will not be banned, according to Lalhmingthanga. He added that efforts will be made to make Aizawl a plastic free city by October 2 on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti.

Aizawl is the largest city and commercial hub of Mizoram with a population of more than 2.93 lakh. Plastic grocery bags are used in large quantities in shopping and business sectors to cater to customers.
