Imphal: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will take up an investigation over the mysterious death case of Babysana, a 14-year-old schoolgirl who was found dead at her hostel in Manipur last week.

The announcement was made by chief minister N Biren Singh on Thursday following a 24-hour total shutdown in the state on Wednesday by a local joint action committee (JAC), paralysing normal life in most parts of the state. The JAC demanded the government to investigate the case and to award befitting punishment to the culprit(s).

Taking to his official Facebook page, CM Biren said, “After thorough discussions, the state home department has decided to hand over the unfortunate incident of Babysana’s case, a Standard Robarth School girl student who was found death in the hostel, to CBI for investigation.”

Justice will be delivered to all, he added.

According to reports, 14-year-old Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu, a student of class VII at Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School in Imphal’s Canchipur was found hanging in her hostel on July 18 morning. And controversy surfaced after the family of the deceased alleged foul play.

Meanwhile, in a meeting held on Thursday between the parents/guardians and the representatives of the All Manipur Student Union (AMSU) here, the gathering unanimously took several resolutions.

According to some of these resolutions, the school authority should make public the hostel’s rules and regulations, no student will remain at the hostel until the authority made public of those who involved in Babysana’s death case and press the government for the implementation of Manipur Private School (Registration &Regulation) Act, 2007, among others.

It was also decided to empty the belongings of the hostellers from the hostel by July 27, it said.
