Mizoram: MPC severs ties with Zoram People’s Movement

Guwahati: Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC), a constituent member of a six-party alliance, Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), on Saturday severed ties with the alliance.

MPC treasurer and spokesperson V Lalthazuala told reporters on Saturday that the party has decided to step out of the ZPM following the alliance being registered as single political party. He also said that the MPC can’t become part of the ZPM if it is a political party.

“We can’t merge with the ZPM by surrendering our party registration. Two parties can’t exist together at the same time. Therefore, we decided to cut ties with the ZPM,” the spokesperson said.

Lalthazuala said that the ZPM was formed basically as a movement to establish a non-Congress, non-Mizo National Front (MNF) government in the state. The alliance had received strong support from the people across the state and secured eight seats in the 40-member Mizoram assembly in the assembly polls held in November last year.

The MPC is willing to be with the ZPM if it continues to go as a ‘grand alliance’ without surrendering their respective party identities, Lalthazuala added, saying that the party will hold talks with other constituent members of ZPM to continue it as alliance.

The ZPM was formed in August 2017 by six minor parties — Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP), MPC, Zoram Exodus Movement (ZEM), Mizoram People’s Party (MPP), Zoram Reformation Front (ZRF) and Zoram Democratic Front (ZDF).

The alliance had contested for 35 seats in the state assembly poll on 28 November last year and won 8 seats with its chief ministerial candidate Lalduhoma winning two seats — Serchhip and Aizawl West-I.

Lalduhoma vacated his Aizawl West-I seat, which was won by the ruling MNF in the assembly by polls in April.

The ZPM has recently got registration from Election Commission of India as single political party which has seven legislators, including three from MPC.

Meanwhile, an MPC legislator said that they (legislators) were not consulted by the party before cutting ties with the ZPM. They will continue to be part of ZPM as they were elected as legislators under the alliance banner, he added.
