Shillong: The mass media department of St Anthony’s College, Shillong in association with Sasakawa Peace Foundation of Japan is launching the first-ever North-East India Audio-Visual Archive in October this year. As a forerunner to the launch, the department is organising the North-East India Archive Summit within the college premises on July 19 and 20.
The first edition of the summit aims to gather academicians, journalists, film-makers, photographers, musicians, sound managers/recordists and archivists from the state who have contributed invaluably to the body of work in their respective fields.
The summit is divided into thematic sessions and a round-table discussion which will commence with an inauguration programme, to be followed by two thematic sessions — the first on the archiving in photography and the second on the archiving in films.
According to college authorities, the department will also be collaborating with the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival, Japan, who will be sharing their expertise and will be aiding in the collection of Northeast Indian documentary films.

The second day of the summit will start with a thematic session on archiving in sound as a medium of communication, to be followed by a session on archiving of news and events and then on archives and a sense of history.
The former chairman of UPSC India, Dr David R Syiemlieh, will attend as the keynote speaker for the round-table discussion. The two-day summit is open to all who wish to join this august gathering, to discuss further on the relevance of a Northeast India Audio-Visual Archive.
