Shillong: Incessant rainfall in the region over the past few days has caused disrupted surface communication in several parts of Meghalaya, particularly the West Khasi hills district. Flood waters from the nearby streams and rivers have also submerged parts of Nongstoin, the district headquarters.

As many as six persons, including a one-and-a-half-year-old child, were rescued by the Nonstoin district police along with the help of local fire and emergency services team on Saturday. However, there have been no reports of casualty so far in the district.

Several school and offices were declared closed in the hill town after the district administration issued an alert across the area following the rise in water levels of the Nondein river.

Vehicular movement along the Nonstoin-Shillong and Nongstoin- Mawkyrwat road was also affected. Traffic came to halt at several places in the wake of flooding.

It still remains a matter of worry for the locals and district administration as the Meteorological department has predicted heavy to very heavy rainfall in different parts of Meghalaya in the next few days.
