Aizawl: Former deputy controller of mines Lalhriatrenga Chhangte has formally joined the BJP. State BJP president Prof JV Hluna inducted Chhangte into the saffron party at a function held at the party office in Aizawl on Friday.
Chhangte had contested the Lok Sabha polls in April as independent but lost to the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF). Chhangte said he found the BJP the best choice for him after studying different political parties in the state. He said he admired Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his love for the country.
Chhangte pledged to fight corruption and serve the people of Mizoram with the help of the Centre.
Interacting with media after the function, he said the saffron party in Mizoram should go according to local ethos. “Though the BJP is basically guided by Hindu ideologies, the party should follow a Christian or scheduled tribe centric ideology in a small state like Mizoram,” he said.
Chhangte said the BJP leaders at the Centre promised him to form a missionary cell to send missionaries to different parts of the country.
Denouncing the allegation that BJP is an anti-Christian or a party that supports communal politics, Chhangte said it was a propaganda given by state Congress because it did not welcome big national party to enter the state. “The BJP as anti-Christian is totally baseless as the party strongly believe in secularism and do not confine itself to particular religion,” he said.
Citing that the Citizenship (Amendment) bill will do no harm to the Mizos, Chhangte said the Mizo people should be concerned about deportation of illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.
