Aizawl: Mizoram is famous for being a football-crazy state, producing many great players and hosting a club — Aizawl FC — that won the prestigious I-league in 2017.
A group of die-hard fans of Chelsea FC — the popular English professional football club — too, is putting the remote Northeastern state of India on the global map, albeit in a different manner.
The fans, who came together to form what they call the Mizo Chelsea Supporters’ Club (MCSC), are making a name for organising charity rides, collecting cash, food and clothes for orphanage. The fan club also organises a blood donation camp whenever Chelsea FC wins a championship trophy.
It all began when a group of friends started a ‘Mizo Chelsea Fans’ page on social media on November 11, 2011 with the motto of charity in the name of Chelsea FC. Every December, the MCSC organises a charity ride. The club’s loyalty and charity work has also recognized by the Chelsea FC.
Last week, when Mizoram witnessed a massive landslide at Durtlang BSUP Complex — where three people lost their lives and many residents relocated — the MCSC organised a fund raiser to collect money for the victims. At this tragic event, the Chelsea FC lent out a support to their loyal fans, posting prayers and condolences on the Chelsea FC Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/86037497258/posts/10157646187707259/?app=fbl
In December, on the eve of MCSC’s charity ride, Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley even sent a video message. As a result, they were able to collect over Rs 1 lakh in cash, bags of rice and vegetables, and dozens of clothes for the Thutak Nunpuitu team orphanage home in Mizoram.
The Chelsea FC also helped the MCSC meet Chelsea’s legend Didier Drogba in Gurgaon in November last year, where the star player was showered with traditional Mizo hat, bags and club T-shirt from his fans. Lalsangpuia Ngente, a hardcore Chelsea fan and handler of the MCSC Facebook page and Twitter account, said, “The fan club is officially registered with Chelsea FC and has the highest honour — the gold tier.”
He added that the MCSC banner will soon be displayed at Stamford Bridge — home of the Chelsea FC.
The club members are proud to say that they hold the distinction of being the only one among the 119 Chelsea fan clubs worldwide to be endorsed in this manner.
