Aizawl: Bringing laurels to the Northeast and the entire nation as whole, 16-year-old Youth Olympic gold medalist from Mizoram, Jeremy Lalrinnunga Ralte, smashed three records in a power-packed performance but failed to register a clean and jerk lift in the category on Day 3 of the Commonwealth Senior Weightlifting Championship in Apia, Samoa on Tuesday.
In an extraordinary performance, Jeremy, competing in the 67 kg category, broke the Youth World, Asian and Commonwealth records in the snatch category with a lift of 136 kg.
Earlier in April this year, the young weightlifter from Mizoram also registered the Youth World, Asian and Commonwealth records for lifting 134 kg at Asian Championship held at Ningbo in China. However, he missed out on a clean and jerk lift there and thus could not register a total lift score at the gold level Olympic qualifying event. The points for the same will counted when the final rankings for Tokyo 2020 cut will be done.
Meanwhile, Indian lifters continued their good showing in the international event bagging as many as six medals, including four golds, two silvers and a bronze medal. National champion holder Achinta Sheuli lifted a total of 305 kg to grab the men’s 73 kg crown. He also went on to clinch the junior title. Manpreet Kaur lifted a total of 207kg (91kg+116kg) to clinch the yellow metal in the 76 kg category for women at the international event.
Former world-champion from Manipur, Mirabai Chanu, won a gold medal on the opening day of the Olympic qualifier event by lifting a total of 191 kg (84 kg + 107 kg) in the senior women’s 49 kg category.
The qualification process for the 2020 Olympics is based on the performances of the weightlifters in six events over a period of 18 months out of which best four results logged by a lifter will be considered.
