Massive landslides halt vehicular movement on NH 10 in Kalimpong

Massive landslides due to incessant rains in parts of Darjeeling & Kalimpong have created havoc as NH 10 has been cut off for vehicular communication

Darjeeling: Road connectivity in several parts of Darjeeling and Kalimpong in West Bengal have been disrupted following incessant rains in the region during the last couple of weeks.

As per reports, commuters in large numbers are facing tough time in several parts of Darjeeling due to massive landslides triggered by heavy rains as over 150mm rain was recorded in the past 36 hours.

Recently, vehicular movement on the National Highway 10, a lifeline connecting Kalimpong district to the nearest state of Sikkim, has been disrupted following massive landslides that occurred especially between Sevoke and Kalimandir area of the district.

Several tourists and hundreds of daily commuters en route to Sikkim are reportedly stranded in the area as vehicular movement has been disrupted as parts of the national highway has been washed away due to the massive landslides.

Visuals available with EastMojo show that parts of a hill standing by the side of the road sliding down heavily leaving stone and boulders piled up on the middle of the national highway.

Personnel from district administration and other department concerned are working overnight to clear the road. However, vehicular movement still remains suspended on the national highway.

Earlier on July 8, an elderly couple died and several others were grievously injured in a massive landslide that occurred late in night at Lopchan in Pubung Fatak area of the district.
