Tripura: Contraband worth over Rs 1 cr seized in 48 hours, 2 held

Agartala: Acting on a tip-off, the state police on Monday seized brown sugar worth Rs 80 lakh and Rs 5.3 lakh in cash from Ambassa in Dhalai district of Tripura, around 180 km from Agartala.

Speaking to EastMojo, officer-in-charge of Ambassa police station Himadri Sarkar said, “We have detained two persons, Khokan Debnath (34) and Rupam Roy (26), from Amabassa. A bike has also been seized from their possession. During checking of the bike, we seized two packets of brown sugar from their possession.”

After that, the police conducted a raid at their house and seized 490 gm of brown sugar worth Rs 80 lakh and Rs 6 lakh in cash.

“A case has been registered against them. Rita Debnath, wife of Khokan Debnath, has also been booked under NDPS Act. Further investigation is on,” Sarkar said.

Earlier, the Border Security Force (BSF) deployed in Tripura seized drugs worth Rs 16 lakh late on Sunday night.

A press release issued by BSF said, “On July 7, the BSF deployed near the Indo-Bangla Border at Kamlasagar in West Tripura district received specific information about smuggling of Yaba tablets. Accordingly, a special operation was planned and troops observed the suspicious movement of one miscreant approaching near Indo-Bangla border fence along with some packets”.

“During a search of the area, the party recovered one small plastic bag containing 2,975 Yaba tablets worth Rs 14, 87,500 from the spot. Seized items were later handed over to Tripura Police,” the press release said.

In another related incident, BSF troops of the border outpost in Srimantapur in Sepahijala district received specific information regarding smuggling of Yaba tablets through Gomati river to Bangladesh.

“BSF troops on duty while dominating a riverine area with rubber boats, observed a stem of a banana tree floating on river Gomti. They took out the banana stem from the river and found one sack tied up with banana stem. On the opening of the sack, 190 Yaba tablets worth Rs 95,000 and 60 bottles of Phensedyl worth Rs 8,415 were recovered.
