Aizawl: Indian women’s hockey player Lalremsiami was given the title of ‘Sports Ambassador of Mizoram University’ on Friday.
“I am really grateful for the support and prayers of my fellow Mizos. I ask them to continue to support me in my future endeavours,” Lalremsiami said at a sports promotion and felicitation programme at MZU Auditorium of Mizoram University in Aizawl.
Last month, the 19-year-old striker won hearts nationwide by deciding to stay back with the team for their knockout games at the FIH Women’s Series Finals in Japan and keep India’s Olympics dream alive, despite getting the news of her father’s death.

The brave girl from Mizoram got the news of her father Lalthansanga Zote’s sudden death a day before the Indian team was to play their semi-final match against Chile. She earned respect from her team-mates and gathered massive support from the public back home when she decided to stay on with her team instead of going home to attend her father’s funeral and helped India in keeping its Olympic dream alive.

Upon Lalremsiami’s return on June 25, her mother broke down and started crying on seeing her. However, putting on a brave face, she held her mother with a smile, and thanked everyone for standing by her and the family during the crisis.

At another felicitation programme organised at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) complex, Lalremsiami received cash, trophies and citations from the Young Mizo Association (YMA) branches of Bethlehem Venthlang and Mission Vengthlang.
