Guwahati: Uber, one of the largest app-based cab services in India, is in fresh trouble again as almost over 8,000 of its driver partners operating in Guwahati have raised serious questions on the terms and conditions, services and regulations provided to them by the company, which gives full commitment to passengers’ safety.
Severely criticising the authorities in the leading app-based cab service in Northeast India, a large section of its driver partners, who are operating in Guwahati for the past three and half years since its launch in 2015 in the city, have alleged that despite numerous requests, the authorities concerned in Uber are yet to inform them under which norms of the Motor Vehicles Act the vehicles have been hired.
To press for their various demands, the driver partners of Uber also staged demonstration in front of the company office here recently.
‘We have asked the authorities in Uber to provide us under which norms of the Motor Vehicles Act our cabs have been put on service. These vehicles come under which categories? Industrial or transport? Despite our numerous requests, they are yet to respond to our queries,” one of the driver partners alleged.
Meanwhile, the driver partners of the cab services have blamed the Uber authorities of changing the rates of service tax in the form of GST on every trip from time to time. “The service tax levied on us in the form of GST on every trip we complete varies very often for reasons best known to them,” some of the driver partners of said.
Revealing about the changing GST on every trip by the Uber, the driver partners said that the minimum service tax that generally needs to stand at 12% for each trip. However, it raises up to 30% and even to 50% of the total fare very often.
“With this high service tax levied on every trip, driver partners are not able to earn the required amount from a certain trip, rather they falling prey to lapsed tax amount in their Uber account,” they regretted.
Significantly, Uber, which provided high incentives to its cab drivers in its initial day of launch at Guwahati, has changed its incentive policy with some alleged malpractices that victimise the drivers of less profit in a day-long service.
Talking about the alleged unlawful methods practiced by their parent body in offering less share of profit to stakeholders, the driver partners of the cab service further alleged that the company frequently closes down accounts of many drivers when the latter is all set to reach the required target set up for incentives as per company policies.
“Many accounts of the cab drivers are being deactivated by Uber without any prior notices one or two trips ahead of the required trips to complete the incentives target,” said another Uber driver.
Interestingly, over 600 driver partners’ accounts were suspended by Uber without any prior notices from the cab service due to the lapsed tax charges on July 5 this year.
Earlier, to press for their long-pending demands, members of the All Assam Cab Operators’ Union with active support from the Assam Police met the higher officials of the Uber on June 10 in Guwahati.
“Expressing serious concern over the issues faced by the driver partners, the meeting demanded a quick and supporting explanation from the Uber,” Ismail Ahmed, general secretary, All Assam Cab Operators’ Union told EastMojo over phone.
