Bishmita Likhak will be conferred with the prestigious award at Rajendra Bhawan in New Delhi on July 11

Guwahati: Bishmita Likhak, a member of the women commando unit of Assam Police ‘Virangana’ is all set to be conferred with the ‘Virangana Savitribai Phule National Award 2019’.

The cop, hailing from Narayanpur in Assam’s Lakhimpur district, will be recognised with the prestigious award at Rajendra Bhawan in New Delhi on July 11.

Babu Jagjivan Ram Kala Sanskriti and Sahitya Akademi will recognise Likhak with the national-level award for the achievements made by her in the past few years.

Virangana, the women commando unit of the state police, was commissioned on June 26, 2013 with an aim to tackle the rise in crime against women over the years.

Sporting a black uniform with violet caps, the women commandos are trained to act swiftly against eve-teasers or anyone trying to harm a woman’s modesty. The women cops carry a pouch containing non-lethal ammunition along with latest electronic devices used to immobilise a target.
