Aizawl: Massive effort is being made to open the southern campus of Mizoram University in south Mizoram’s Lunglei town, state higher and technical education minister Dr R Lalthangliana told the assembly on Thursday.
Replying to a query from Dr Vanlaltanpuia of the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), Lalthangliana said the academic council of the university put the task in its top priority once the university is well established.
He said that the Mizoram University had written several times to the Union ministry of human resource development but it is yet to receive any response. He said that the university proposed to begin the southern campus with 10 departments and offer Master’s degree and doctorate degrees.

The minister also informed the assembly that Rs 320 lakh has been sanctioned for the construction of library in Govt T Romana College.
Besides, Rs 31 lakh was sanctioned under the New Economic Development Programme (NEDP) for the purpose. Of this, Rs 14 lakh has been released as first installment, he said.
The library building is scheduled to be completed within two years, he added.

Mizoram University is a central university established in July 2001 by the Mizoram University Act, 2000. The state governor is the chief rector. Located at Tanhril on the western outskirts of Aizawl, the university is ranked 21st in the country.
