Aizawl: Mizoram Merchant Association (MIMA), an umbrella body of all merchants in the state, on Friday sought flight service between Aizawl and Guwahati citing economic and health reasons, sources said.

The meeting of the association held here on Friday decided to write to Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the matter, MIMA secretary Lalawmpuia said.

He said that the meeting observed the inconvenience faced by the people of Mizoram especially traders and patients due to the absence of air service between Aizawl and Guwahati.

“The absence of flight service from Aizawl to Guwahati has greatly inconvenienced traders since Guwahati is the business hub of the northeast and all important company depots are located,” he said. The absence of flight service in this sector also caused inconvenience to patients as they could not travel to Guwahati for treatment, he added.

Mizoram has been facing airlink problem after Jet Airways withdrew operation from the state in February this year. The state now has only one direct air link with Kolkata, which is operated by Air India.

The meeting also asked both the state government and central commissionerate of Mizoram not to issue two years validity of Inner Line Permit (ILP) under GST for running a trade in the state, the leader said.

Stating that the indigenous people are gradually being economically assimilated by outsiders, the association demanded that all ILPs issued to non-tribals in last two years should be cancelled immediately, he said.

The meeting also asked all Mizo landlords, who owned rooms and flats, not to let their houses or rooms to non-indigenous people for opening business shop and running a trade in the state.

The association will inspect all the business shops run by non-indigenous people and make written appeals to the Mizo owners to evacuate their tenants, according to Lalawmpuia.

He said that the meeting further agreed to approach the state government to maintain proper record of the details of those Mizos, who sponsored non-tribal for obtaining ILP in order to ensure that no unfair practice is done while issuing ILP to non-indigenous people.
