Guwahati: Speaking about climate change and preventive measures adopted by the hill state, which can set an example for others, Meghalaya chief minister Conrad K Sangma put his stat on the world map at Caux Forum in Switzerland on Thursday.
The Caux Dialogues on land and security with the theme of ‘living landscapes: putting people at the centre of ecosystem restoration’ got underway in Switzerland on Thursday. It will go on till June 30. It aims to bring global leaders and practitioners who will explore how community and individual actions can reverse environmental degradation leading to peace and stability.

The chief minister spoke about the state’s water policy, which is soon going to be presented in the state assembly. It is a holistic approach towards water and will comprise of budgeting, prioritising and equitisation of water supply, and protection and conservation of spring shed and catchment area.
In a tweet, the CM said that measures like policy on water will ensure that every household in India has water at their doorstep.

Further, Sangma spoke about a vast contrast in Meghalaya against the rest of the world. He said, “In India and particular Meghalaya [we] have initiated a policy to adopt villages and ensure different amenities and infrastructure is created in our villages. We are committed to provide opportunities to people living in villages.”

The chief minister further spoke about the hilly state most important aspect which is known worldwide, that it homes the top two wettest places on earth: Mawsynram and Cherrapunji. He said, the state which is half the size of Denmark and has a population of around 3.3 million and receives about 1,200 cm of rainfall in a year. Hence, justifying the name Meghalaya, which means boat of clouds.

Sangma met Christopher Evans, a member of MRA which was instrumental during the movement of statehood of Meghalaya. Before becoming a state in 1972, Meghalaya was a part of Assam.
Sangma tweeted: “Met Mr Chris Evans in Caux, Swizerland, a member of MRA which was instrumental in guiding our leaders during the movement of Statehood of Meghalaya. Mr Evans was a young 19-year-old boy who was present in Shillong on the day Statehood was given to Meghalaya.”
His visit to Switzerland and meeting Evans was a way to connect and show the relationship that goes back 47 years .
