Agartala: Tripura has set an example for the rest of the states by carrying out a massive drive against drugs in the past 15 months of the BJP-IPFT government. The active participation of state police, Assam Rifles, Border Security Force and other security agencies have successfully destroyed a number of drug rackets in the state, chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb said on Wednesday.

Deb announced this while flagging off a rally to mark International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in front of Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhawan in Agartala. Hundreds of school students and troopers, and officials of police and paramilitary forces marched to different parts of the city as part of the rally.

“When I declared the ‘Nasha Mukt Tripura’ drive for the first time, I gave a free hand to the police department to start their drive against contraband items in state. Huge pressure from different levels starting from political to grassroots level was created over me. The drive continued and over the past one year more than 80,000 kg of contraband items have been seized from across the state. However, in the last 10 years, not even 80 kg of such items were seized in the state,” said Deb.

Earlier in March last year, soon after swearing in as the chief minister, Deb had told a gathering of students and defence personnel that unless the ruler himself is not certain on his role and carry a positive approach, neither the state nor the young minds can develop.

Taking a dig at former CM Manik Sarkar, Deb said that the vision and willingness to work for the progress was missing during the previous government’s regime which forced the youths towards cultivation of cannabis and smuggling of different drugs throughout the state.

“After taking oath on March 9, 2018, over 37 lakh people of Tripura gave responsibility on my shoulders in assuring security of mothers and sisters as well as paving a path for young generation by adopting policies and framing rules,” he added.

Now, people of Tripura are dreaming and creating a vision for achieving targets and goals in life. The government is looking forward of creating infrastructural hubs in the fields of IT, education and health with an aim to build a health society, Deb added.
