Guwahati: Bogibeel Bridge, the longest rail-cum-road bridge of India that reduces the travel distance between Assam and Arunachal Pradesh by almost 150 km, is now posing a grave threat to commuters using the bridge.
The bridge that happens to be a lifeline of the people from both the states has now become a flash-point for criminal activities, with several loot and theft related incidents being reported in the recent past. As per reports, unknown miscreants have looted commuters travelling by the bridge on several occasions; most importantly, they have happened in broad daylight.
In a video that did the rounds on social media recently, Dargiar Karlo, a resident of Likabali in Arunachal Pradesh’s Upper Siang district, shared an unfortunate incident that happened with him while he was travelling to Dibrugarh in Assam. Karlo said he was accosted by a gang of five persons at the south end of the bridge on June 21 while he was on his way from Likabali to attend his mother-in-law, undergoing treatment in Dibrugarh.
“After crossing Bogibeel bridge, about a km from the Dibrugarh end, a gang of miscreants coming in a Nano vehicle stopped my car and looted all my money I was carrying for my mother-in-law’s treatment,” he said.
The victim appealed the governments of both the states to take strict action to curb the increasing number of criminal activities on the bridge.
“The government should look into the matter immediately as, earlier too, many commuters travelling through the bridge were looted in the same area on separate occasions,” he said.
He further urged the BJP-led Arunachal Pradesh state government to improve health facilities in the state so that people don’t have to travel to Assam for better medical treatments.
“I would request [Pema] Khandu government to improve health facilities in Arunachal Pradesh, so that we don’t have to travel out and be victim to such incidents,” he said.
Meanwhile, the additional superintendent of dibrugarh police (HQ), Dhurba Jyoti Borah, informed that they have not received any complaint from the person concerned in the video. However, the matter is being investigated by the district police.
Earlier, many people, particularly from Arunachal Pradesh including government officials had complained that they were being threatened by unknown miscreants, in and around the Bogibeel Bridge area while travelling.
Significantly, the deputy commissioner of Tirap district in Arunachal had requested his Dibrugarh counterpart to take up the matter seriously and make proper security arrangements in the area so that people are not harassed.
