Guwahati: The first time that his students didn’t listen to him was also, unfortunately, his last day in school. Lalram Mawia, who had been the headmaster of Govt Mizoram High School in Aizawl since 2008, was given an emotional farewell as he bid goodbye to an institution that he had called home for several years.
A disciplinarian that he is, Mawia had asked his students not to venture out of their classrooms during school hours on his last day. However, what awaited him as he marched forward to leave the school was simply overwhelming.
In a video that is now doing the rounds on social media, Mawia is seen surrounded by students as he walks out of the school premises. Almost all of them are seen crying inconsolably and asking him not to go.
Mawia has been reportedly transferred to another school, Government Piang Hleia High School in Aizawl, as its new headmaster. He got the transfer order on June 14.
Incidentally, Mawia himself was a pupil of the school from 1976 to 1978. He was appointed as the headmaster of the school in 2008.
“I did not expect that kind of a reaction. I believe in discipline, and I thought the kids didn’t like me that much, but their reaction was unexpected,” said Mawia, an alumnus of St Edmund’s College in Shillong where he pursued his graduation.
The 57-year-old headmaster has been in the teaching profession for 32 years. Being a headmaster, he didn’t get enough time to teach regular classes, but he said: “I taught them how to learn.”
Mawia used to greet his students every morning and send them off every evening. He taught the students moral education and health education. “I taught them reality, as I want them to be successful in life,” he added.
Meanwhile, Mawia’s transfer order was given some political colours, saying the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) was behind the move as his brother is a leader of the opposition Congress in the state.
Mawia, however, refused to comment on the issue. “As a government servant, I have been given orders and will resume my new duty soon,” he added.
