Aizawl: The southern part of Mizoram will be connected with the rest of the country by railways, state transport minister TJ Lalnuntluanga told the house on Wednesday.
In 2013-2014, the Union ministry of railways had granted permission to conduct survey for extension of railway line between Sairang near Aizawl and Hmawngbuchhuah in south Mizoram’s Lawngtlai district, the minister said while replying to a query from opposition leader Lalduhoma.
He said that preliminary engineering level traffic survey has been completed.
Though the state transport department is nominally used as the nodal department, the actual execution of the construction falls under union ministry of railways, he said.

He added that the Centre is yet to begin construction of railway line between Sairang and Hmawngbuchhuah.
Meanwhile, officials said that construction of broad- gauge railway line between Sairang and Bairabi, bordering Assam, to link up with the southern part of the state is under progress.
The 51-km broad-gauge line that will include seven bridges and 23 tunnels is scheduled to be completed by December next year.
The first broad-gauge commercial freight train chugged into Bairabi railway station in March, 2016.
