Agartala: In a significant development, the police arrested a suspected member of an international drug mafia from a private rented house in Sonamura in Tripura’s Sepahijala district on Wednesday.
Speaking with EastMojo, Sepahijala SP Kulwant Singh said that the police had specific information regarding the drug dealer’s presence in Tripura. On the basis of this, the police conducted a raid and nabbed the 50-year-old accused, Shamshul Alam.
Alam was on the run as he is a wanted criminal in Mizoram’s Champhai police station.
The SP said, “This is a big fish and certainly after interrogation more such people involved with this international drug trade will come to light.”
Tripura police has already contacted the DIG of Mizoram and informed him about Alam’s detention, Singh said. A team of Mizoram police has also reached Agartala, he added. Alam will be taken to transit remand for Mizoram, the SP added.
Earlier in the month of September, the government’s drive against the contraband had brought death threats to CM Biplab Kumar Deb. With the arrest of Alam, it is becoming clearer that Tripura is being used as a corridor for smuggling drugs.
Sonamura OC said that Alam had introduced himself as a resident of Silchar, Assam. He was living as a tenant for 15 days at a house in Sonamura Nagar Panchayat. Alam is also suspected of being a Rohingya from Myanmar.
The OC also claimed that the drug dealer is a resident of Arakan, a coastal region in Myanmar. He said that Alam was roaming in the region and was suspected of trafficking Yaba tablets. Yaba, also known as ‘madness drug’ or ‘Nazi speed’, is a combination of a number of stimulants.
According to the Sonamura OC, “It is not possible for a person coming from outside and take a room on rent. It is suspected that some youths might have helped him and hence, the police are trying to find out more details.”
