Agartala: Expressing serious concern over the prevailing law-and-order situation in the state, a woman Congress worker in Agartala has submitted an FIR at East Agartala police station alleging that extortion notes were served to some Congress workers in areas under Banamalipur assembly constituency.
This comes a few days after political violence took place in some parts of Tripura after the announcement of Lok Sabha poll results. In her complaint, Rupa Dey has also said that she has been away from her house since May 23 as her family is under threat of political vendetta.
Speaking with EastMojo, Dey said, “I am a Mahila Congress worker. I and my family members are facing continuous threat and attacks soon after the announcement of election results on May 23. Today, a letter was found in my house with the name of BJP and its workers where they demanded Rs 20,000 from my family as extortion money.”
The 28-year-old woman, who is also the member of the women’s wing of the Congress from South Chandrapur village in Banamalipur assembly constituency area, filed the FIR with the East Agartala police on Tuesday and said that extortion notes demanding hefty amounts were also served to many others in the locality on Tuesday morning.

Meanwhile, confirming the development, the officer in-charge of East Agartala Police Station, Manik Debnath, said that an FIR has been registered in this connection. “We have received an FIR on allegations of extortion demands from Chandrapur area. These extortion notices were served to at least seven to eight people. We are investigating into the case,” Debnath said, adding: “The complainants have alleged that some unknown people, posing as BJP workers, demanded money from them and threatened with dire consequences, if they fail to pay money.”
Refuting the allegations, BJP state spokesperson Nabendu Bhattacharya said, “We don’t extort money from anyone. We have set rules for collecting subscription. After demonetisation, we took to cashless transaction. We have got reports that many people are posing as BJP workers and extorting money from people.”
Tripura chief minister Biplab Kumar Deb has already made it clear that his government would take a zero-toleration policy on political violence and extortion.
