Kohima: A day after EastMojo highlighted the story of 16-year-old Momita Karki, who secured a spot in the top 10 list in the state Class X board exams despite hailing from a poor family, an Indian-Australian man reached out to this correspondent offering financial assistance to the bright student.

Since Karki has already received free admission at her new school, the Good Samaritan, who originally hails from Chennai in Tamil Nadu, decided to pay for her books, uniforms and transportation fees.

After Rs 30,000 was deposited to this correspondent’s account on May 30, the cash was finally handed over to Karki in the presence of her mother Bhes Kumari on Monday. The patron has also assured to sponsor Karki’s education for the next three years.

Momita Karki, 16, aptly proved that there are no secrets to success, except hard work

Karki, who now studies Commerce at the Rüzhükhrie Government Higher Secondary School, Kohima, lives at a farm on the outskirts of Kohima at L Khel village in Thizama.

Karki secured 95.33% with distinction in all the subjects — thereby securing a spot in the top 10 — in this year’s High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) exam conducted by the Nagaland Board of Secondary Education (NBSE).

She was a student of Regimental School, 4th NAP, Thizama.

Incidentally, Karki had to spend about 35 minutes walking from her home to this school every day. However, Karki never let such obstacles get in the way of her success.

On Monday, in the presence of her classmates, Karki emotionally received the amount from her class teacher at school.

In the absence of the school’s principal and the vice-principal, both of whom were on other official duty, Karki’s class teacher proposed the idea of handing over the cash in the classroom, with the hope that Karki’s classmates will also be inspired by her success story. Notably, Karki’s face lit up as this reporter proudly introduced her mother to the class.

Speaking to EastMojo, Karki’s mother said: “It is quite embarrassing to receive money from someone we don’t even know. We are thankful that someone out there is helping my girl to study further. May God bless that generous person.”
