Guwahati: KC Das Commerce College principal Dr Hrishikesh Baruah is a proud man. He should be — after all, six of his students marked their spots in the merit list of the recently-declared Higher Secondary (HS) examination results in the commerce stream.
Six students, all girls, brought laurels to the college this year. They were Ayushi Jain (2nd), Hansika Chawla (7th), Disha Jain (8th); Muskaan Pachisia, Jagruti Sewthia and Ishika Agarwal (all 10th).
On being asked about the way of teaching and its approaches to his pupils, Dr Baruah revealed that apart from the classroom teachings, the college administration and its teaching staff ensure that they take out some spare their time for their students for any assistance or clarifications.
“Education in our college is not only restricted to the domain of the classroom. We keep a continuous evaluation on the students, conduct mock tests and try to set tougher questions and even go for home visits. We keep track of how the students have prepared and even check their note sheets. We try to put forth a positive approach to students to show that we are all there for them,” he added.
Of the total 311 students who appeared for the HS examinations conducted by the Assam Higher Secondary Education Council (AHSEC) recently, 125 students got star marks, 246 got 1st division, 41 got 2nd division and 21 got 3rd division, taking the total pass percentage to 99 from the college.
A student of the college, Prasidh Lakhtokia, got the state highest mark in economics by securing 98 out of 100.
Next in line to KC Das Commerce College is another chart leader — Gauhati Commerce College with 100% passing marks this year. Out of the total 434 students who appeared in the HS commerce exam this year, three students — Neha Agarwala, Arunabh Nath and Rahul Roy — made it to the top 10 list.
Gauhati Commerce College principal Dr Homeshwar Kalita felt that human qualities like honesty, hard work and cleanliness are some of the factors leading to the students’ achievement. “Discipline is the foundation to success in life,” he added.
