Aizawl/Churchandpur: While people today desert their near and dear ones in times of danger, a 13-year-old girl, Vasty Lalhmeltha, from a remote village in Manipur didn’t think twice before putting her life at stake to help a friend, becoming an inspiration to humanity.
Vasty, a resident of Perzawl village in Manipur’s newly created Pherzawl district near Mizoram border, lost her life while saving her friend from drowning in the river.
A local leader and Hmar Youth Association (HYA) general secretary Lalramsiem Neitham said that the incident occurred around 4.30 pm on Monday when Vasty and her friend Emmanuel Lalziding were bathing in the Tuithapui river which passes through Rengkai village in Churachandpur district.

He said that Emmanuel who was swimming in the river was taken away by a wave, and upon seeing this, Vasty quickly dived into the river to rescue her drowning friend. However, she was swept away to the deep side of the river by a strong current.

On learning of the incident, local volunteers who were resting nearby the river rushed to the spot and dragged the two girls out.
While was Emmanuel was saved, Vasty was taken to Churachandpur district hospital where doctors declared her brought dead, the local leader added.

Vasty had rented a house and lived with her mother at Rengkai village. She studied in Class VIII at Assembly God School in the village and was writing her exams.
She was laid to rest at Rengkai cemetery on Tuesday .
