Aizawl: Mizoram chief minister and Mizo National Front (MNF) president Zoramthanga on Thursday claimed that the good jobs done by his government in just a few months of coming to power has helped the party win both the Lok Sabha elections and assembly by-polls.
Results of the election to the lone Lok Sabha seat and assembly by-election to Aizawl West-I seat held on April 11 were declared on Thursday along with rest of the country.
The MNF has achieved a landslide victory in both the polls by defeating its arch rival Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM)-Congress combine. The ruling camp was filled with jubilant mood as party workers assembled to celebrate their victory on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after his party won both the polls, Zoramthanga said people are fully satisfied with the government’s performance. The MNF had ousted Congress in the assembly polls held on November 28 last year by winning 26 out of 40 seats. It has been in power for only five months since then. Now the ruling rally has rose from 26 to 27.
“We are grateful to God and the people for their blessing and support. Our little performance during five months has convinced the people and helped us to sweep both the polls,” he said.
He said that people did not fully understand the ZPM-Congress alliance. He also claimed that people are well aware that the ZPM was not fit to rule.
The three-time Mizoram chief minister said that the Congress wave is waning day by day. “Congress has suffered humiliating defeat and was completely dethroned at the centre, which is a manifestation of Congress losing ground in the country,” he said.
Congratulating the BJP-led NDA for winning a thumping victory, Zoramthanga said the new government would usher in development in the country. MNF is part of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA).
“In the context of Mizoram, the NDA government will be benefited by the Mizo people. The gate of development will now open for the people of Mizoram,” he said.
Six candidates had contested for the Lok Sabha elections and three for the assembly bypolls to Aizawl West-I seat. As per the result declared on Thursday, MNF nominee C Lalrosanga has won the lone Lok Sabha seat by defeating his arch rival ZPM-Congress joint candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar.
Zothantluanga, who contest on the MNF ticket also won Aizawl West-I assembly seat.
