Aizawl: A day after it won both the Lok Sabha polls and assembly by-election, the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) on Friday held a grand celebration at the party office in Aizawl amidst jubilant mood. The event was graced by chief minister and party president Zoramthanga, ministers, legislators and party leaders.
Speaking on the occasion, Zoramthanga said the MNF was established basically by the Mizos with a sole purpose to develop Mizoram and safeguard the rights of the Mizos. He claimed that the loyalty and stability of the party workers as member of Mizo party has helped it swept both the polls. “No matter our rival massively attacked us with baseless allegations, the almighty God protected us and blessed us with victory due to our loyalty and stability,” he said.
Slamming the Congress as outsider, Zoramthanga said the grand-old party entered Mizoram under several pretexts. “Initially, the Congress was timid to make its base here. But later it became arrogant,” he said.
Taking a dig at opposition Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the three-time chief minister said, “Ironically the alliance joined hands with the Congress that vouch for liquor even as it (ZPM) opposed opening of wine shops.”
ZPM is the alliance formed by several minor parties including Zoram Nationalist Party (ZNP) and Mizoram People’s Conference (MPC). The rebel leader-turned-politician also appealed party workers to stick to the Mizo nationalism.
Zoramthanga further thanked the people for extending support to his party in recent polls. The MNF had unseated its arch rival Congress in last assembly elections held in November last year. It had also won the Lok Sabha election after a hiatus of 10 years and assembly by-poll to Aizawl West-I seat on Thursday.
The newly elected Lok Sabha member, C Lalrosanga, thanked the almighty God and the people for their support. He said that he felt great to have been elected as representative of the people of Mizoram. The leader added that he would set out as disciple of Christ to work for the development of the state.
Zothantluanga, who has been elected from Aizawl West-I assembly seat also thanked the people. As per the results declared on Thursday night, Lalrosanga defeated his arch rival ZPM-Congress joined candidate Lalnghinglova Hmar by a margin of 8,140 votes, while Zonthantluanga smashed his nearest opponent Lalbuanga Sailo of the ZPM-Congress combine candidate by 7,167 votes.
