Imphal: Retaining its wave, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its coalition partner Naga People’s Front (NPF) on Thursday swept the two Lok Sabha seats in Manipur.
While the BJP’s Dr Rajkumar Ranjan Singh emerged victorious over Congress’ Oinam Nabakishore Singh in the Inner Manipur Parliamentary constituency, NPF’s Dr Lorho S Pfoze won over BJP’s Houlim Shokhopao Mate in Outer Manipur.
In the Inner Manipur constituency, of the total 7,59,301 registered votes, including postal ballots, the BJP leader secured 2,63,632 votes, which is 17,755 more than his rival who secured 2,45,877 votes.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) candidate Dr Moirangthem Nara Singh obtained 1,33,813 votes, making him the third candidate who secured the highest votes in Outer Manipur. On the other hand, Md. Iliyash Khan, an Independent candidate, secured the least votes — 498.
Meanwhile, NPF’s Pfoze, who had been leading most of the way by a considerable margin of votes on the counting day to his nearest rival BJP candidate Houlim Shokhopao Mate, secured 3,63,527 votes out of the total 8,58,029 votes in Outer Manipur.
While Pfoze’s rival K James came third with 1,52,510 votes, independent candidate Leikhan Kaipu secured the least votes with 996. Overall NOTA votes stood at 2,772.
According to reports, the certificates of elections were handed over to the winning candidates by respective returning officers N Praveen and Rosita Haobam late on Thursday night.
In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, Congress had won both the Parliamentary seats in Manipur. However, the Rahul Gandhi-led party could not secure seat this season.
Out of the 13 Assembly constituencies in Imphal West district, BJP’s Rajkumar Ranjan Singh secured the highest votes from Konthoujam, whereas O Nabakishore of the Congress received the highest ballots from the Mayang Imphal Assembly constituency.
In the outer constituency, NPF’s Pfoze secured the highest ballots from Ukhrul and Chingai constituencies in Ukhrul district, the inhabitants of the Tangkhul Naga community.
