Agartala: The Tripura Commission for Women has decided to investigate the case involving a tribal woman who had accused Dhananjoy Tripura, the ruling Indigenous People’s Front of Tripura (IPFT) MLA from Raima Valley constituency of Dhalai district, of raping her on the pretext of marriage.
Barnali Goswami, chairperson of the commission, said that the commission has already got in touch with the victim and has asked her opinion on whether she would like to visit them or they would instead reach her place on Wednesday.
“The case will be dealt by the commission only after the victim says that she wants us to get involved in the matter,” said Goswami.
According to the complaint, the victim alleged that she was criminally assaulted several times since 2014 on the pretext of marrying her once he became an MLA. He, however, started ignoring her and rejecting her marriage proposal.
The victim even took the matter to IPFT supremo and revenue minister Narendra Chandra Debbarma, but Dhananjoy refused to marry her.
A case under sections 376 and 417 of the IPC was registered agaisnt him in Mandai police station. Later, the case was transferred to the Agartala East women’s police station on Sunday evening.
The legislator has, however, denied the allegations levelled against him and called it a political conspiracy to malign his image.
